Loudness and level

The LUFS module showing momentary and short-term loudness readings
Fig. 3

LUFS: momentary and short-term loudness.

Momentary loudness (the last 400 ms) and short-term loudness (the last 3 seconds), measured to ITU-R BS.1770-4 and EBU R128. This is the loudness streaming services measure, so it is the one to watch when you work to a target.

For the integrated figure and true peak of a finished master, use REAPER’s own loudness meter or the statistics from a dry-run render.

The VU module, a needle meter on a scale that turns red above 0 VU
Fig. 4

VU: the weight of the mix.

A classic VU needle with proper 300 ms ballistics, calibrated so 0 VU is a sine wave at −18 dBFS. It is slow on purpose: it shows the weight and body of the mix rather than every transient, which is why it is so useful next to a peak meter. The scale turns red above 0 VU.

The Peak module with left and right peak meters and RMS markers
Fig. 5

Peak: fast left and right meters with RMS markers.

Fast left and right peak meters, each with a marker for the RMS level. The meter goes orange and then red as it nears full scale. Click the PEAK label to step through the scales: dBFS, then K-12, K-14 and K-20 for working to the K-System.
